Happy Birthday Google?

Happy Birthday Google?

On 27th September, Google wished itself a happy birthday, with a happy “Google doodle” added to its homepage. Technically the search engine and technology giant is now 18 years old so cause for celebration all round. Or is it?

Given that Google’s corporate mission is to “organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”, one would think that the very least the company could do was remember its own birthday. Right?

However, their own company history indicates Google.com was registered on 15th September 1997 (which would make the company 19 already), while they filed for incorporation on 4th September 1998 (which would make their birthday several weeks ago).

However, the Google doodle has been put up on 27th September on most years. Except in 2005 when it was put on 26th September; or 2004 when it was 7th September; and 2003 when it was September 8th.

Perhaps the company just enjoys celebrating birthdays and likes to eat cake as often as possible. Or perhaps – dare one say it – one of their famous algorithms has a glitch and cannot calculate 365 days by 24 hours?

Anyway Google - Happy Birthday. And here’s to the next 18 years. Or is it 19, or 17?
